Hacksaw Ridge tells the story of Desmond Doss (Garfield), a pacifist medic who refused to fire his weapon during the allies’ siege of Okinawa.
Garfield captures Doss’s inner turmoil with a mature, nuanced performance worthy of Academy accolades. Plus, look out for Vince Vaughn who is excellent as a gruff Sergeant.
Gibson’s direction is also on top form.
His hyper-realistic depiction of war packs a ferocious punch. But whilst Gibson’s film is a visceral, relentless assault on the senses, it’s also peppered with understated scenes of emotion and humanity.
These moments elevate Hacksaw Ridge above others in the genre.
